Sam Farraway: Nationals Candidate for Calare
Tell us a little about yourself and your background.
I was raised in Bathurst and from an early age, I learned that hard work and resilience aren’t just nice words - they’re essential. When my dad fell ill, I stepped up to keep our family car rental business running, growing it from a handful of cars to a fleet of over 300 across several towns including Mudgee. That journey showed me what it means to dig in, build something real and be there for your family. Those same values are what drive me today in community service - working hard and staying committed to the people I represent.
What inspired you to enter politics and put up your hand to represent Calare?
My heart’s in the Central West and I’m here to make a real difference. Our regional communities face challenges that those living in the city just don’t see, and I want to make sure our voices are heard loud and clear in Canberra. I’m committed to pushing for fair policies that reflect our needs, so the Central West stays on the map and never gets left behind.
What are some of your key priorities?
I’m fired up about securing reliable, affordable energy without sacrificing our landscape, backing our farmers and fixing the doctor shortages across the region. But let’s talk about petrol—prices in Mudgee are through the roof and it’s hitting local families and small businesses hard, it’s being going on for decades and there needs to be an ACCC inquiry into the practices there. While Labor’s cost-of-living crisis isn’t making it easier, I’m pushing to bring down those prices so we can keep our businesses running and families moving. My focus is cutting the red tape and fighting for practical solutions, so that every community in Calare gets a fair go and a real chance to thrive.
What do you enjoy most about the Calare region?
I love everything about Calare—from our tight-knit communities to the stunning landscapes that make country life the best life. There’s nothing quite like the way we pull together through tough times, supporting each other and looking out for our own. Hearing people’s stories is what gets me out of bed each day and drives me to get things done, whether it’s backing our farmers, helping small businesses, or supporting community projects. The Central West is home and I’m ready to stand up and fight for it.
How do you plan to support small businesses in the region?
Running a small business showed me just how tough it can be to keep things moving. I’m committed to cutting back the red tape so people can succeed without unnecessary government interference. It’s all about making sure local businesses have the support they need to grow and thrive.
Anything else you’d like the community to know?
I want everyone in our community to feel they can reach out and share what’s on their mind—whether it’s a challenge, a success, or an idea for improvement. Like I’ve already mentioned, I’ve lived the struggles of running a small business, seen firsthand the impact of rising petrol prices and the urgent need for more doctors in Mudgee. Good representation means knowing what people need, and I’m here for the community and to get things done.
