A Feast For The Senses
Mar 07, 2025
At Mudgee Nursery the arrival of autumn is heralded by the changing colours in the trees, shrubs and perennial garden planted on site.
Ornamental Pears, Crepe Myrtles, Roses, London Planes, Poplars and the like set the nursery ablaze with colour. Native plants gear up for another flowering season and veggie gardens are working hard at the dual jobs of having summer crops harvested while also nurturing crops for the winter days to come.
The Mudgee Nursery green life experts are huge fans of this season in our region and are on site to help you create your autumnal patch of paradise. They’ll guide you on what will work in your garden, how to improve your soils and discuss with you the seasonal conditions specific to your patch.
Autumn is an opportunity to plant a garden that reflects the colour palette of the season. Tones of red, orange, gold can be blended to create a feast for the eyes. Play with leaf sizes, variations in bark colour and texture, tree shapes and sizes. Your choices are many and the hardest part will be making the decision on what to leave out of your design.
Let the Mudgee Nursery team help you create a picturesque retreat, layering elements that can keep you cool in the warmer months and put on a show for you as we leave the hot weather behind and have a break in the lower temperatures before the winter chill.
Perennials reach their height and burst in to colour for their final flourish as they bring autumnal tones into the garden. Seed heads maturing on plants add an extra layer of interest as leaf colours change and plants get ready to have a nap for this cooler part of the year.
But it’s not just the visual aesthetics of your garden to think about - harvest season is in full swing. Veggie gardens will need a boost of nutrients as they gear up for cropping in the cooler months. Composting, fertilising and topping up of spent potting mix is one of many jobs in the food garden.
It’s a veritable cornucopia of produce at this time of year with pumpkins, apples, pears, quince and so much more coming off the vines and trees and heading for the table and the pantry.
Winter food crops should be well on their way to maturity before the cold weather hits and it is the best time for greens and cool weather herbs to get their start. At the nursery, lettuce, rocket, parsleys, coriander, root veggies, calendula, leeks, onions and stir fry greens in this shoulder season that will carry right through to spring.
Get out and enjoy autumn and all the respite from the summer heat that the milder weather brings. There’s so much to see and incorporate into your own private spaces and the staff at Mudgee Nursery just love to help turn your autumn garden dreams into a reality.
