A Room of her own

homes & holidays Jun 09, 2026

Step inside Rebecca Saunders’ home, Editor of Mid-Western Living Magazine, and you’ll find a space that feels less like a wardrobe and more like a private dressing room. Designed to be seen, enjoyed and lived in daily, it reflects her love of bold design, thoughtful detail and creating spaces with personality.

From the outset, the brief was clear. Big, bold and luxurious. A space that didn’t shy away from colour or personality, but instead embraced it.

Drawing inspiration from Greg Penn’s book Man with a Hammer, Rebecca’s design leans confidently into rich tones, layered textures and statement detail.

The cabinetry, finished in a striking polyurethane paint in Wild Rose, sets the tone. It’s a colour that commands attention while still feeling warm and inviting - transforming the space from simple storage into a true feature within the home.

Paired with aged brass handles, there’s a subtle nod to heritage, grounding the boldness with a sense of timelessness and craftsmanship.

Designed for Real Life
While the aesthetic is striking, it’s the functionality that truly sets this walk-in robe apart.
Designed by Rebecca and built by Mudgee Kitchens, the layout has been carefully considered to ensure the space works just as well as it looks.

Every element has purpose - hanging rails, shelving, and drawer systems are all positioned with purpose, making organisation effortless and intuitive.

A standout feature is the detachable ladder with rail system, offering easy access to upper cabinetry while introducing a sense of classic charm. It’s a detail often seen in high-end dressing rooms, adding both practicality and presence to the space.

A Place for Everything
From tailored jackets to statement pieces and carefully organised footwear, every section of the robe has been designed with intention.

Open hanging spaces allow garments to be easily accessed, while shelving and drawers provide structured storage for folded items.

The inclusion of dedicated zones ensures the space remains tidy and uncluttered, even with a growing wardrobe.

Lighting That Elevates the Experience
One of the most considered elements of Rebecca’s robe is the layered lighting design. As the doors open, automatic internal strip lighting brings the space to life, softly illuminating clothing, accessories and finishes in their best light.

Complementing this is a remote-controlled under-cupboard light, adding another layer of warmth and flexibility depending on the time of day or mood.

Together, these features blend convenience with quiet luxury, transforming everyday routines into something just that little bit more special.

More Than a Wardrobe

Rebecca’s walk-in robe is a perfect example of how great design can transform an everyday space into something truly exceptional.

It’s a reminder that storage doesn’t have to be hidden away. It can be celebrated, showcased, and enjoyed.

It’s this balance of design, craftsmanship and practicality that defines the Mudgee Kitchens approach, with a level of customisation and attention to detail that ensures every space is as functional as it is beautiful.
