Marys Mayhem: Gravel, Grit and a Whole Lot of Heart
Jun 20, 2025
In the dusty folds of rural NSW, where backroads wind through gum trees and gold-tinged paddocks, a new kind of cycling event is stirring both tyres and souls. Marys Mayhem, the third in Graveleur’s Bushranger Series, isn’t just another race - it’s a rally cry for adventure, inclusion, and community connection.
At its core is Mike Israel - father, endurance cyclist, and founder of Graveleur. Mike’s life has revolved around cycling for the better part of two decades, and he’s been lucky to cycle all around the world. Now he’s sharing his passion with anyone interested in riding a bike, and has traded race kits for gravel bikes and long-haul rides through some of the most remote and rugged terrain in the country.
“I started Graveleur back in 2017 with a few mates looking for dirt roads to ride,” Mike recalls. “It grew into something much bigger - a national community of over 6,500 riders who love getting off the beaten path and supporting the regional towns they pass through.”
That ethos - explore, connect, support - is the beating heart of Marys Mayhem, which is held in and around Mudgee each year. The name pays tribute to Mary Ann Bugg, a fearless and independent Worimi woman, widely recognised as Australia’s first female bushranger. Her legacy - defiant, resourceful, and strong - resonates through every kilometre of this event.
“Mudgee was a natural choice,” Mike says. “It’s got amazing dirt roads, scenic country, a cracking food scene and great places to stay. Plus, the local cycling club and community have been incredibly supportive.”
That community spirit runs deep. From the Rotary Clubs of Rylstone and Mudgee to the CWA branches in Gulgong and Rylstone, local groups have thrown their weight behind the event - staffing checkpoints, baking cakes, offering first aid, and creating a festival-like energy riders can feel every step of the way.
The local business partnerships are just as thoughtful.
The festival kicks off on Friday night with registration and a bike expo at Three Tails Brewery. Small Batch Brewery serves as the official event centre on Saturday with post ride drinks, food and music till 5pm. The party continues back in town with Kelly’s Irish Pub offering a special dinner deal for all riders and their entourage.
The Property Shop, Giant Mudgee, and The Globe Hotel Rylstone are also providing key support to the event, as are industry sponsors Hydraplay Hydration and the Mental Wheels Foundation - ensuring the event is powered by passion at every level. Their contributions go beyond logos and products; they’re helping create an experience that feels welcoming and truly connected to the heart of the community.
But what truly sets Marys Mayhem apart is its inclusivity.
“Graveleur is for everyone,” Mike says. “Whether you’re twelve or seventy, on a carbon race bike or a hand-me-down hybrid, there’s a route for you.” With three course lengths available and discounts for families and clubs, it’s a rare event that invites all comers - not just seasoned cyclists.
The weekend wraps with a bustling community market outside the Globe Hotel, where last year “practically every resident from Rylstone came out,” Mike smiles, “We felt so welcomed. It was magic.” In the spirit of Mary Ann Bugg herself, Marys Mayhem is bold, inclusive, and unforgettable. Whether you’re pedalling or cheering from the sidelines, one thing is certain - this ride leaves its mark.
